Urgent Appeal to Demand Release of Two Japanese Hostages Taken by the Islamic State

We are people representing citizens’ groups which staged broad anti-war campaigns against the war in Iraq committed by the United States and the United Kingdom as well as against the government of Japan which supported belligerency to involve in their attacks. At this moment we engage in intensified campaigns against the Abe government which is keen in ‘building up Japan as a nation that could wage wars abroad’ and wild in consolidating military cooperation with the United States.

In the name of justice and humanitarianism to be realized in the world, we here demand an immediate release of the two Japanese citizens without depriving them of lives, with temporal reservation how to evaluate their entry to Syria and stances they take over the war situation. At the same time we urge the government of Japan to make maximum efforts in order to save their lives.

We are people who consistently oppose the government’s policy package to lead Japan to warfare, including its approval of use of the right of collective self-defense. We are people who wish the government of Japan not to take a dangerous and erroneous path to join the US global war policy but to pursue genuine international contribution of Japan based on the Peace Constitution. That is why we have been engaged in various citizens’ activities. In the course of our experiences we have witnessed a right court decision that the Japan’s Air Self Defense Force’s cooperation with the US military in the Middle East violates the Constitution.

We sincerely hope that a group of people who have abducted the two men might understand petitions and efforts of Japanese people and should solve the issue prudently so that we may not be disappointed with a loss of priceless lives.
